In the latest episode of “On the Beat with ABC,” we had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Modele Ogunniyi, a heart failure cardiologist, professor at Emory University, and passionate advocate for equitable cardiovascular care. Hosted by Dr. Jayne Morgan, the ABC Communications Committee Co-chair, this engaging interview sheds light on Dr. Ogunniyi’s journey, her dedication to research, and her commitment to mentorship.

Dr. Ogunniyi’s path into cardiology began during her time as a public health student at Johns Hopkins, where she was introduced to research on hypertension in Black men. This research sparked a passion in her to understand and address the health disparities that disproportionately affect underrepresented populations. Over the years, her work has focused on ensuring equitable access to cardiovascular care, particularly for communities facing significant barriers.

Mentorship is a theme that runs deeply through Dr. Ogunniyi’s career. Early in her journey, she was mentored by members of the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC), and now, as Co-chair of the Membership Committee and an ABC board member, she continues to mentor the next generation of cardiologists. Dr. Ogunniyi’s dedication to fostering inclusive and equitable mentorship environments is part of the legacy she hopes to leave behind.

When asked about her vision for the future, Dr. Ogunniyi shares her hope for a world where cardiovascular health equity is the standard and where the statistics of underrepresentation in cardiology, particularly among Black physicians, are changed.
