The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is seeking exceptional candidates to be considered for the position of Director of the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP) in the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP).

NCCDPHP leads national efforts to promote health and well-being through prevention and control of chronic diseases. The center’s strategic priorities are strengthening epidemiology and surveillance, promoting environmental improvement to increase opportunities for health, strengthening health systems to effectively deliver preventive services, and promoting linkages between the community and clinical settings to better manage chronic conditions.

The Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention employs these and other strategies as the lead federal agency for heart disease and stroke prevention and management. The division supports state, local, tribal and territorial heart disease and stroke prevention programs that help millions of Americans prevent and control high blood pressure and reduce other risk factors for heart disease and stroke. These efforts aim to lower death rates from heart disease and stroke, which are the first and fifth leading causes of death in the United States. Duties will include:
• Leading the DHDSP senior staff in the development and execution of strategic goals and objectives for heart disease and stroke prevention and management.
• Managing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating the activities of the division; providing leadership, scientific oversight, and guidance in program initiation, development and implementation.
• Serving as the key spokesperson for the division.
• Creating and strengthening productive relationships with leadership of other divisions in the NCCDPHP, other units in CDC, and other HHS agencies working on heart disease and stroke prevention, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS).
• Working with external partners, including national organizations such as the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, National Association of Community Health Centers, and the American Medical Association.
• Providing leadership and direction for public health efforts and nationally funded programs that address heart disease and stroke.
• Working with Division senior leadership to strengthen quality and effectiveness of the workforce, as well as the work environment.

Minimum requirements:
A PhD, DPH, MD or DO, with training and experience in public health, health services research, epidemiology, psychology, medical sociology, or health communications is required. A record of scholarly publications and experience with peer-reviewed research in public health or related fields will be a significant review criterion. A demonstrated ability to provide leadership and foster collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams in the development, execution and evaluation of major public health initiatives is essential. A track record establishing collegial functional relationships among different organizations is important. Management experience with fiscal accountability will be a significant review criterion.
