Program Summary
Primary care providers face complex challenges everyday in their busy practices. With rapid changes in medicine, staying informed about new developments can be equally challenging. Our goal in this CME activity is to help you hone your skills in the diagnosis and management of patients with varied conditions you are likely encountering in your practice.
We have recruited a faculty of well-known thought leaders and experienced teachers who, as clinicians themselves, understand the challenges you face every day as a primary care provider. Our faculty will be at your disposal to provide evidence-based science, current treatment guidelines, discuss challenging cases, and provide answers for you that can ultimately lead to better health care for your patients. The presentations will include several interactive cases and discussion sessions to keep you actively learning.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Select the appropriate treatment for trichomoniasis; Summarize the role for pre-operative urine screens to predict infections risk; Describe how substance abuse can influence medication adherence for HIV preexposure prophylaxis & risk of community-acquired pneumonia; Recognize how to elicit & respond appropriately to a history of penicillin allergy in patients that require antimicrobial therapy; Explain how to properly evaluate a patient with a suspected uncomplicated cellulitis syndrome; Select the appropriate timing of influenza vaccination in patients with chronic medical conditions.
- Assess the clinical impact of herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia; Evaluate the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of available vaccines to prevent herpes zoster; Develop effective strategies to promote adherence to national vaccine guidelines.
- Explain and apply CDC and other guidelines for initiating treatment for influenza in specific patient populations; Assess new and emerging antiviral therapies profiles used to treat influenza; Demonstrate effective communication techniques to address perceptions of symptom severity, vaccination measures, and therapeutic safety and efficacy.
- Review the pathophysiology of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and congestive heart failure (CHF) in T2DM; Recognize how the mechanism of action of the SGLT-2 inhibitor class can potentially have a beneficial impact on cardio-renal disease; Discuss CVOTs to date in T2DM and the impact of the SGLT-2 inhibitor class on improving cardiovascular outcomes and preventing progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD); Incorporate evolving clinical data into the management of diabetes in patients with, or at high risk for, cardiovascular disease (CVD).
- Recognize the pattern of glucocorticoid (GC)-induced hyperglycemia; Identify the insulin profile best suited to address this pattern of hyperglycemia; Determine how to dose insulin therapy using a weight-based approach.
