ABC members Demilade Adedinsewo, MD, MPH; Jeffrey Alexis, MD; Deborah L. Crabbe, MD; and Joyce Njoroge, MD are among the researchers contributing to REBIRTH — a landmark NIH-funded clinical trial investigating a potential new treatment for peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM). PPCM is a rare but serious form of heart failure that occurs in the final month of pregnancy or within five months after giving birth, and it disproportionately affects Black women.
Drs. Adedinsewo, Alexis, and Crabbe are serving as Principal Investigators at their respective sites — Mayo Clinic Florida in Jacksonville, the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, and Temple Heart and Vascular Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Njoroge is a study team member at the Stanford University site in Stanford, California.
About the REBIRTH Trial
REBIRTH — the Randomized Evaluation of Bromocriptine In Myocardial Recovery THerapy for Peripartum Cardiomyopathy — is a placebo-controlled, double-blind randomized trial testing whether bromocriptine, a drug already used in Europe to treat PPCM, can improve cardiac recovery when added to standard heart failure treatment. The trial is currently enrolling at approximately 60 sites across the United States and three sites in Canada. Women who are breastfeeding and do not qualify for the main trial may be eligible for a separate Breastfeeding Cohort arm.
ABC recently met with REBIRTH study leadership to discuss the trial and explore opportunities for collaboration. We are proud to recognize the contributions our members are making to research that could meaningfully improve outcomes for Black women — a community at the center of ABC’s mission. We look forward to sharing more about how this collaboration may grow in the months ahead.
