It is with profound sadness that the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC) shares the news of the passing of our esteemed colleague, visionary leader, and passionate healer, Dr. Baxter Montgomery.
Dr. Montgomery was a board-certified cardiologist and a trailblazer in lifestyle medicine, nationally recognized for integrating whole food, plant-based nutrition into the prevention and reversal of chronic cardiovascular disease. As the founder of the Montgomery Heart & Wellness Center in Houston, Texas, he transformed the lives of countless patients by combining cutting-edge cardiology with nutritional intervention rooted in evidence-based practice and deep compassion.
A long-time member and advocate within ABC, Dr. Montgomery was a frequent speaker, mentor, and motivator, known for challenging conventional paradigms and championing bold approaches to health equity. He inspired a generation of clinicians—particularly Black physicians—to embrace the power of food as medicine, to center the patient, and to always strive for optimal outcomes beyond the prescription pad.
His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched, the physicians he mentored, and the vision he advanced: that heart disease, even in its most severe forms, can often be reversed with the right tools, community, and commitment.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and patients. ABC mourns his loss while celebrating a life of purpose, impact, and healing.
May his memory continue to inspire us all.
