In recognition of American Heart Month, the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC) has launched a national public education campaign encouraging individuals and families to “Know Your Numbers” and take practical steps to prevent heart disease.
Heart disease remains one of the nation’s leading causes of death—yet many heart-related complications can be prevented through earlier detection, routine care, and sustained lifestyle changes. ABC’s February campaign is focused on meeting people where they are with clear, actionable guidance that can make a measurable difference.
“Every month should be Heart Month and every month should be Black History Month,” said Anthony Fletcher, MD, President of the ABC. “This campaign is a call to action for families across the country to recognize the seriousness of heart disease, prioritize prevention, and take steps that can change outcomes.”
Because February also marks Black History Month, the campaign highlights the historic and ongoing contributions of Black cardiologists whose leadership, innovation, research, and service have helped shape modern cardiovascular care.
A Prevention Campaign Focused on Action
Throughout February, ABC is amplifying prevention messages through national outreach, partner engagement, and media commentary centered on everyday decisions that protect heart health.
Key campaign themes include:
- Routine checkups and early detection — why screenings matter even when symptoms aren’t present
- Knowing your numbers — blood pressure, cholesterol (including LDL-C), and blood sugar
- Understanding additional risk markers — including the role of Lp(a) in cardiovascular risk
- Practical risk reduction — nutrition, physical activity, medication adherence, and smoking cessation
- Connecting to trusted resources — especially in underserved communities
- Honoring Black medical leadership — spotlighting ABC members’ impact on patient care, research, and training
“Knowing your numbers, keeping regular appointments, and getting evidence-based guidance early can change the trajectory of a family’s health,” Dr. Fletcher added.
What ABC Encourages During Heart Month
ABC urges individuals nationwide to:
- Schedule a checkup and request a heart-risk assessment
- Know key metrics: blood pressure, cholesterol (including LDL-C), and blood sugar
- Ask about Lp(a) testing based on personal and family history
- Identify local heart health resources and screening opportunities
- Share reminders with loved ones, particularly those with a family history of heart disease or stroke
