2027 International Dr. Jay Brown Best Abstract Competition

Submission Deadline: July 5, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET

The Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC) invites cardiovascular researchers and clinicians training outside the United States to submit original research for the 2027 International Dr. Jay Brown Best Abstract Competition. Recognized as one of the premier scientific opportunities within the ABC community, this competition highlights innovative cardiovascular research and elevates emerging voices in global cardiovascular medicine.

The competition is supported in part by Amgen Pharmaceuticals.

About the Competition

The International Dr. Jay Brown Best Abstract Competition was created to support and recognize outstanding cardiovascular research from residents and cardiology fellows across the globe. The competition provides early-career investigators with a platform to:

  • Showcase original cardiovascular research to an international audience
  • Gain visibility among distinguished cardiovascular leaders
  • Present before a panel of expert judges in a virtual scientific competition
  • Connect with mentors and peers within the ABC network
  • Participate in major U.S. cardiovascular scientific sessions if selected as a winner

The Award

Four outstanding abstracts are selected as finalists and invited to present virtually in Summer 2026. From the virtual competition, two winners are selected for the following:

All travel awards are contingent upon visa approval, safe and feasible travel conditions, and current international travel advisories. The safety and well-being of awardees is ABC’s foremost priority. ABC reserves the right to modify travel arrangements in response to safety concerns or other extenuating circumstances. Should travel not be possible for these reasons, ABC will work with affected winners to explore alternative ways to honor their achievement.

Eligibility

The International Dr. Jay Brown Best Abstract Competition is open to trainees in cardiovascular medicine — including residents and cardiology fellows — who are currently training outside the United States. U.S.-based trainees are not eligible for this competition; please see the U.S. Dr. Jay Brown Best Abstract Competition for the domestic program.

How to Submit

Submit your abstract through the ABC application portal. Please review the detailed guidelines and submission instructions provided within the application portal.

Honoring Dr. Jay Brown

The International Dr. Jay Brown Best Abstract Competition was established in 2025 and is named in honor of Dr. Jay Brown — ABC’s fourth President, Chief of Cardiology at Harlem Hospital Center, and a pioneering advocate for cardiovascular health in underserved communities. As Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University, Dr. Brown rebuilt Harlem Hospital’s acute coronary care unit, led the Heart of Harlem Healthy Heart Program, and shaped a generation of cardiologists through his mentorship and research. He lived from 1944 to 1994. The U.S.-based Dr. Jay Brown Best Abstract Competition has been held annually since 1992.
